Handmade Provençal Ochre Ceramic Gravy Boat Set

"I'm an ochre girl!" Patricia exclaims — and this handmade gravy boat from a Provençal potter makes the point perfectly.

Thrown and glazed by hand, the set comprises a generously proportioned boat, an oval stand and a small ladle, all in the same warm, honeyed ochre that has defined Patricia's kitchen at Chanteduc, her farmhouse and cooking school in Vaison-la-Romaine, for decades. The boat's rim is shaped into a soft, undulating wave — not fussy, but distinctly artisanal — with a wide pouring lip on one side and a graceful upswept handle on the other.

On a table set for Sunday lunch, it would hold a roasting jus, a beurre blanc or a simple vinaigrette with equal ease. In a contemporary kitchen or dining room, grouped with other ochre or earth-toned ceramics, it reads as both collected and intentional — the kind of piece that looks as though it has always been there.
