A handsome late 19th-century French copper ferrat bucket, beautifully handcrafted from hammered copper sheets and reinforced with riveted straps. The slightly tapering form is fitted with iron carrying handles, while punched ornament decorates the lower band and vertical seams. Decades of use have given the copper a rich, mellow patina with warm variations in tone, enhancing its authentic rustic character. The interior retains traces of its original tin lining and shows wear and minor dents consistent with age and use, yet remains watertight and unpierced.
A ferrat was a traditional measure used throughout southern and central France. Before the adoption of the metric system, vessels of this type served as standardized units for measuring and transporting grain, chestnuts, wine, and other agricultural products. Their capacity varied from one locality to another, but they played an essential role in rural commerce and daily life. The robust construction and practical handles reflect their working purpose, while the decorative punched motifs reveal the pride and craftsmanship invested in even the most utilitarian objects.
Today, this charming vessel lends itself to a variety of decorative uses. It makes an attractive cachepot for seasonal plants, a distinctive wine cooler, or a rustic centrepiece on a kitchen island. The warm copper tones pair effortlessly with stone, wood, and linen, bringing texture, history, and authentic French country character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
