"Patricia and Walter find this wonderfully humorous — do not talk to the workers when they're operating machinery," Patricia exclaims. This commanding vintage French factory sign spent decades on the wall of Walter's woodworking atelier at Chanteduc, the Wells' farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine. The long, narrow wooden board is painted in crisp white lettering on a deep black ground, reading "DÉFENSE de PARLER aux OUVRIERS travaillant aux Machines" — No talking to the workers operating machinery. The main text is set in bold block capitals, while the lower line flows in a looser cursive script, giving the sign a graphic confidence that is both authoritative and visually striking. The scale is extraordinary — this is a sign made to be seen across a workshop floor. Due to its exceptional length, the sign will be cut for shipping after the "t" at the end of the word "travaillant" and will need to be hung in two pieces. Displayed end to end along a hallway, stairwell, or studio wall, it makes an arresting statement — a piece of French industrial history with its sense of humor fully intact.
