Important Italian Pietra Dura Dining Table circa 1900 - 71¼" x 35¾"

This Italian pietra dura table, probably dating from around 1900, has an impressive rectangular black marble top inlaid with a large flowering urn, framed by scrolling ornament and geometric borders in richly varied red, cream, green and ochre stones. The natural veining and color of the individual marbles are used to suggest petals, leaves and the modeled surface of the vase, giving the composition the effect of a painting executed in stone. The top rests on an elegant wrought-iron base formed from broad scrolling supports, punctuated by small gilt-metal details. Fine surface scratches and minor age-related marks are visible to the marble, while the iron has developed a warm oxidized patina, all consistent with age and use.

The technique belongs to the celebrated Florentine tradition of commesso di pietre dure, developed to remarkable sophistication under the Medici. Ferdinando I de’ Medici formally established the grand-ducal hardstone workshops in Florence in 1588, where skilled artisans precisely cut, shaped and fitted brilliantly colored stones to create intricate designs. The art enjoyed renewed popularity in the 19th century, when Florentine workshops produced elaborate tabletops for an international clientele and Grand Tour travelers.

The brilliantly colored stone inlay and elegant scrolling iron base give this table the presence to anchor an entire room. Used as a six-seat dining table, it would create a memorable room with very little else needed around it. The open wrought-iron base keeps the substantial top visually light, while simple chairs and pale plaster, limestone or terracotta would let the colored stones take center stage. It could also work beautifully as a center table in a large entrance hall.
