This substantial late 19th-century Napoleon III oval medallion mirror embodies the refined historicism of the Second Empire, artfully balancing Louis XV exuberance with the classical clarity of Louis XVI. The deeply carved giltwood frame is crowned by a sculptural openwork ribbon-bow crest and encircled by a structured garland of oak leaves and acorns, while a rocaille shell cartouche anchors the base; a delicate beaded inner molding frames the original beveled plate.
Executed in traditional gold leaf over gesso and red bole, the gilding glows with a warm, mellow luster, its softly burnished surfaces and matte grounds catching the light with quiet sophistication. The carving, confidently modeled in the round, remains crisp and expressive, showing only timeworn highlights, light rubbing to the high points and minor gesso chips, while the mirror plate retains excellent clarity with only minor foxing and wear.
Handsomely proportioned and beautifully luminous, this mirror lends Old World grandeur to a formal room, or brings a refined glow to a dressing room or bathroom. With its refined oval shape and flowing ribbon detail, the mirror softens structured spaces and harmonizes effortlessly with natural stone, textured linen, or paneled walls across classic and modern interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
