Italian Carved Giltwood Mirror w/ Faux-Marble Frame in the Rococo Revival Style - 38½" x 26¾"

An Italian wall mirror from the mid-20th century, circa 1950s, with a carved giltwood crest in the spirit of the 18th century. The rectangular frame is finished in soft sage faux-marble paint with a narrow gilt inner border, while the exuberant crest unfurls in acanthus leaves and C-scrolls with a projecting flower at the top, echoing the lively ornament and movement of the Rococo style. The mirror plate is attractively foxed, scattering silvery constellations across the glass. 

The overall finish, from the softly worn gilding to the sage faux-marble frame and speckled mirror plate, was intentionally created to evoke the patina and character of an earlier period. The finish and carving read as hand-worked, with traces of gesso visible beneath the gilding. This mirror balances exuberant ornament with elegant restraint. The carved acanthus crest, inspired by rocaille motifs, introduces movement and flourish, while the rectilinear frame painted in soft faux marble keeps the silhouette composed and architectural. Its finishes were intentionally treated to evoke the patina of age, from the mellowed gilding to the softly foxed mirror plate, giving the piece the quiet charm of something long treasured. 

Hung in an entry, powder room, or above a console, it brings warmth, sparkle, and a note of old-world refinement. The softly mottled glass catches candlelight beautifully, while the sage and gilt tones sit effortlessly beside limestone, painted paneling, or patinated metals. Both decorative and atmospheric, it anchors a room with the easy elegance of a piece that feels at home in interiors layered with history as well as in more contemporary settings.
