Italian Ecclesiastical Pricket Candelabrum in Repoussé Brass 19th Century - 38¼"

A tall Italian 19th-century ecclesiastical pricket candelabrum with repoussé brass mounted on a carved wooden structure. The vertical shaft rises from a molded plinth decorated with palmettes and scrolling acanthus. Two tiers of richly modelled acanthus brackets project from the stem, supporting a pair of lateral pricket candle holders with shallow bobeches, while a third pricket sits at the top. The repoussé brass sheet is applied to the front, creating crisp, deeply modelled ornament, while the reverse reveals the painted wooden support, indicating the piece was designed to be viewed from the front on an altar or against a wall.

The brass has developed a mellow patina with pewter-toned oxidation and darker tones in the recessed decoration. The piece remains in good antique condition with visible wear to the brass, including surface rubbing, small breaks and minor losses to some of the ornamental edges. Scattered wax residue and surface marks reflect long use and contribute to the authentic character and warm patina of the piece. Such candelabra were made to hold thick beeswax tapers and illuminate altars, chapels, and sacristies. Worked in metal or gilded wood, their reflective surfaces amplified candlelight, enhancing the glow of the flames and lending a sense of grandeur intended to inspire and impress churchgoers.

Its strong vertical form commands attention on a console, mantel, or dining table. Lit with beeswax candles, it casts a warm glow that highlights the aged brass and brings a sense of history and quiet grandeur to a room.
