Sculptural Italian Witch’s Mirror w/ Polychrome and Gilt Fruit Garland Carving - 28¼"

An Italian round witch’s mirror from the late 18th to early 19th century, finely carved in wood, painted, and gilded. The frame is richly ornamented with hand-carved garlands of leaves and clustered fruit, tied with ribbons and crowned by a basket crest, all executed with notable skill and a strong sense of balance and rhythm. The carving retains a beautifully mellowed patina, softened by age and handling, which enhances the depth of the relief and the warmth of the gilding. The convex mirror plate remains in beautiful condition with very few age spots. 

Convex mirrors of this period were highly prized across Europe for their ability to amplify candlelight and capture a sweeping view of an interior, combining practicality with poetic effect. They were also traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits, hence the enduring name “witch’s mirror.”

This mirror brings a distinctly theatrical and luminous presence to an interior. Hung in an entry, powder room, or above a console, the curved glass scatters light and animates surrounding objects with subtle movement.
