Jieldé French Industrial Articulated Workshop Lamp w/ Gray Patina

A classic of French industrial design, this Jieldé articulated workshop lamp spent decades clamped to the workbench in Walter's atelier at Chanteduc, the Wells farmhouse near Vaison-la-Romaine. Designed in 1950 by Jean-Louis Domecq — who named his company Jieldé after the French pronunciation of his initials, J-L-D — it was conceived for his own mechanical workshop in Saint-Priest, near Lyon, before becoming a fixture of French factories, architects' offices and, eventually, domestic life. "I just love them," Walter says simply, and this example's honest patina makes the feeling entirely mutual. Finished in a muted grey-blue, the lamp has the straightforward, utilitarian character that made it an enduring icon of mid-century French design. Its two long articulated arms pivot at ball-jointed connections, with electrical contacts built directly into the joints — Domecq's ingenious solution that eliminated visible wiring entirely. The original bench clamp allows it to be fixed securely to the edge of a desk, worktop or table and repositioned with ease. The domed shade and worn metal surfaces speak to decades of genuine, affectionate use. Originally at home in workshops and studios, the Jieldé reached a wider domestic audience when Terence Conran included it in the Habitat catalogue, and it has been manufactured and assembled in France ever since. This example — a tangible piece of daily life at Chanteduc — would be equally at ease clamped to a kitchen worktop, a writing desk or a studio table, casting its focused beam with the same quiet efficiency it brought to Walter's countless hours of repairs and bricolage.
