Large 1970s Provençal-Style Display Cabinet w/ Aged Polychrome Finish - 85" x 72½"

This large two-part display cabinet was custom-built in the 1970s in the manner of traditional Provençal cabinetry, with a particularly attractive architectural composition. The upper section is organized around a projecting central niche with an arched opening, while glazed sections, molded panels and stepped cornices give the façade depth and rhythm. The interior backing is also decoratively treated rather than left plain, creating a more layered backdrop for ceramics, books and collected objects. Beneath the central niche, a small button handle operates a pull-out writing surface, adding a discreet and useful functional detail. Its palette of faded blue, soft cream, warm ochre and deeper blue has been deliberately rubbed and aged, giving the piece the mellow character of older Provençal furniture.

Despite its generous scale, the relatively narrow depth, glazing and open central niche keep it visually light. The cabinet offers a great deal of practical storage while remaining highly decorative. The shelves are removable, and two additional shelves can be fitted within the central niche, or the niche can be left open to showcase a larger ceramic or sculpture object.  As a more recent, well-made piece, it is also fully functional, with doors, locks, fittings and the pull-out writing surface operating smoothly for everyday use.

It would work especially well in a dining room for china and tableware, in a living room for books and collected objects, or in a large kitchen where its generous capacity and softly aged colors would bring a strong Provençal country-house character without the visual weight of a fully closed cabinet.
