A handsome Anduze garden urn in terracotta, dating from the late 19th century and bearing the Boisset Anduze stamp. The form follows the classic Anduze model that has become emblematic of southern France: a generous baluster-shaped body rising from a spreading foot to a broad rolled rim, enriched with applied garlands and moulded cartouches. Inspired by the Medici urns admired during the Renaissance and produced in Anduze for centuries, this elegant silhouette was designed to showcase citrus trees in the grand gardens and orangeries of Provence and the Languedoc. Its balanced proportions and distinctive relief decoration have made it one of the most enduring and recognisable forms in French garden design.
What makes this urn particularly appealing is its beautifully weathered surface. Layers of green and ochre glaze have softened over time, revealing the warm terracotta beneath and creating a wonderfully painterly patina that could only have developed through decades of outdoor use. The surface displays glaze losses, wear, and old restorations consistent with age, all contributing to its character and authenticity. With its generous proportions and richly textured finish, this urn makes a striking focal point on a terrace, beside an entrance, or in a conservatory. Equally beautiful planted with citrus, olive trees, or clipped boxwood, it also works as a sculptural decorative element in its own right, bringing timeless Provençal charm to any setting.
