This handsome French storage jar in terracotta originates from Castelnaudary in the southwest of France and dates to the late 19th century. The ovoid body rises gracefully from a small ring foot to a wide, flared collar with a thick rounded lip, the interior and rim finished in a warm straw-yellow glaze. The exterior remains largely unglazed, revealing a soft buff clay highlighted by distinctive copper-green glaze drips on one side. These marks are the result of glaze from another vessel in the same kiln accidentally running onto the surface during firing, a common occurrence in traditional kilns where different pieces were fired together. This chance effect created a striking, one-of-a-kind feature that enhances the jar’s individuality and visual appeal. The surface shows scattered rim chips, small glaze losses to the lip, surface abrasions, and mineral deposits consistent with age and outdoor use, with no structural cracks observed. These timeworn details enhance its authentic charm and speak to the jar’s long and storied life in the French countryside.
Castelnaudary potteries in Languedoc produced sturdy household storage jars with glazed interiors suitable for liquids and preserves, while the outer walls were left porous. This example reflects the region’s distinctive style with its wide flared mouth, offering easier access than the narrower-necked jarres de Biot of Provence, to which it is otherwise closely related.
Sculptural in scale, the jar makes a striking planter for citrus or olive trees in a conservatory or covered terrace, ideally lined to protect the interior glaze. Indoors, it brings texture and presence when filled with dried branches or positioned near a farmhouse table to anchor an entry with rustic warmth. Its soft palette and authentic patina harmonize beautifully with Mediterranean, country, and coastal interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
