An elegant French overmantel mirror from the 19th century in the Louis XVI style. A moulded frame with an inner beaded border gives it structure, while a crest of ribbons and bows tied around a central rosette adorns the top, adding a note of decorative refinement. The frame is finished in traditional water gilding, the gold retaining a warm, honeyed tone that shifts between bright and matte as it catches the light. Where the gilding has gently worn, the red bole beneath is revealed, adding depth and an authentic sense of age. The old mirror plate, possibly not original, remains clear and bright, with minimal signs of age.
Think of it above a fireplace in a pared-back living room, the gilding catching late afternoon light and warming everything around it. It works equally well offsetting clean, modern lines, bringing a layer of history and softness. Leaned casually against a wall or hung to anchor a room, it adds a quiet, collected feel. Its notably clear plate also makes it a beautiful and functional addition in a bathroom or dressing room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
