This beautiful large 19th-century earthenware jug from southern France, possibly Provence or the Gard, has a generously rounded body, a narrow neck and a graceful curved handle. Its rich honey-yellow glaze is particularly luminous, with subtle variations in warm ochre and amber tones that give the piece a wonderful Mediterranean warmth. A fine network of crazing runs across the surface, adding depth and richness to the glaze. Scattered chips, scratches and areas of glaze loss reveal the pale clay beneath, while unexpected touches of green near the base add further interest.
Originally made for practical use, perhaps to store or pour olive oil, this lovely jug has all the sunny charm of traditional southern French pottery. With its generous shape and glowing yellow glaze, this jug has a cheerful, welcoming presence. It would look beautiful on a large wooden kitchen table, an open shelf or a rustic sideboard, adding a lovely pop of color among natural wood, stone and more neutral ceramics. Displayed on its own or alongside a collection of antique French pottery, it brings a little Mediterranean sunshine into the home.
