Large Antique French Black and Gilt Frame, circa 1880 - 31½" x 26"

A large French cassetta-style frame, dating to around 1880, with a broad black frieze set between finely molded gilt inner and outer borders. The design is notably restrained, relying on the crisp geometry of the profile and the contrast between matte black and warm gold. The gilding shows natural rubbing and small losses, particularly along the outer edges and corners, revealing warmer reddish tones beneath, while the black frieze bears a few light scratches and surface marks. These signs of age soften the graphic lines and give the frame a pleasing, gently timeworn character. This late nineteenth-century frame has a particularly chic, understated presence.
