Large Antique French “Le Gargantua” Cheese Advertising Sign, Early 20th Century - 31½"

A large French advertising sign from the early 20th century, hand-painted on two joined wooden boards for the Gargantua cheese brand. The wonderfully faded composition depicts Gargantua, Rabelais’ famously voracious giant, being fed cheese with a pitchfork by a much smaller figure, humorously emphasizing his legendary appetite. The original lettering has faded to the point of near-erasure in places, yet remains legible against the weathered blue ground, with “Gruyère Comté Extra” across the upper section and “Le Gargantua, Maison Barbier” below. Iron fittings reinforce the perimeter. The boards have moved over time, widening the central gap and adding to the sign’s weathered character. 

The choice of Gargantua was particularly apt for a food advertisement: Rabelais’ larger-than-life character had long embodied appetite, excess, and the pleasures of the table in French popular culture. Depicting the giant being fed cheese with a pitchfork turns that familiar association into an amusing and immediately recognizable image.

Its generous scale gives the sign presence without overwhelming a room, while the faded paint and humorous imagery keep the effect relaxed. In a kitchen or dining space, its old Comté branding and wonderfully eccentric Gargantua scene introduce a distinctly French culinary note and plenty of character.
