This large antique French soup tureen by Creil et Montereau has a wonderfully rich patina, with mottled honey, caramel, and warm brown tones tracing a fine network of crazing. Its generous rounded body is framed by a substantial rim and two sculptural scroll handles, lending elegance to its simple, practical form. The maker’s stamp is visible underneath.

Formed in 1840 through the merger of two French potteries, Creil et Montereau became a celebrated name in fine earthenware, producing tableware and decorative ceramics that earned recognition at international exhibitions. Its pieces remain an enduring part of France’s rich ceramic heritage.

Presented without its lid, this characterful piece would make a beautiful centerpiece on a farmhouse table or kitchen island, or a striking addition to a collection of antique French ceramics. For a seasonal arrangement, place a separate watertight vessel inside and fill with loosely gathered flowers or foliage.

Pronounced crazing, staining, and surface wear contribute to its distinctive, timeworn appearance.
