This superb large-scale 'cruche' is from Castelnaudary in south west France. Note the twisted handles. There are some minor faults from the firing process and a little crack on one handle but it's strong and not repaired. Late nineteenth-century. Water ewers like these were originally carried by women on their heads to fetch water from the village fountain.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
