Large Antique Green-Glazed Terracotta Orjol - 15¾"

A particularly handsome and generously proportioned orjol from southwestern France and dating from the mid to late -19th century. Made in glazed terracotta, it has a broad rounded body, two large twisted handles, a projecting spout, and small finger-worked side lugs that add to its strongly handmade character. The rich green glaze is especially appealing, with fine craquelure throughout that gives the surface depth and variation. There are areas of glaze loss and wear consistent with age, but no significant cracks or chips, leaving the vessel in notably good condition for its age.

Traditionally used as water jugs in the Languedoc region, orjols are a distinctive form of southern French utilitarian pottery, recognizable by their bulbous bodies, generous handles, and raised pouring spouts joined to the handle. The unusually broad proportions and elaborate twisted handles give this example a particularly decorative presence. Displayed on a large table, console, or kitchen island, its saturated green glaze and substantial silhouette introduce color, texture, and the relaxed character of antique southern French pottery to an interior.
