A substantial hand-carved stone mortar of tapered cylindrical form, with four rounded lug handles spaced around the rim, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Hewn from a single block of dense stone, it displays a beautifully weathered surface with a coarse, tactile grain in soft grey tones, enriched by traces of natural mossing and age. The interior is gently worn, while the exterior bears minor nicks, abrasions, and light staining consistent with long use and outdoor display. At some point in its life, the mortar appears to have been repurposed as a cachepot, contributing to the attractive patina and weathering visible today.
Traditionally, mortars like this were essential tools in both culinary and medicinal practices, used for grinding herbs, spices, and other ingredients. Intended today for decorative use only, this example's weathered patina and sculptural form make it a striking accent indoors or out. Planted with herbs in a kitchen, or displayed on a terrace with lavender or cacti, it brings a sense of history and understated rustic elegance to both traditional and contemporary settings.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
