Large Antique Marbled-Glazed Ceramic Pitcher from the French Alps - 10¾"

This large 19th-century ceramic pitcher likely comes from the Isère region of southeastern France and is distinguished by its generous proportions and richly worked jaspé glaze. Its full, rounded body rises to a narrower neck with a loop handle and hand-shaped pouring spout, while the surface is animated by flowing layers of cream, terracotta and green that merge into an expressive marbled pattern. Numerous traces of use are visible, particularly around the rim and base, with areas of glaze loss and old chips that add depth to the surface and reinforce its beautifully aged character.

Jaspé wares formed part of the vernacular pottery traditions of southeastern France, where everyday vessels were enlivened by freely applied colored slips and glazes. Here, the generous scale and richness of the decoration give the pitcher a particularly strong decorative presence.
