US$2,469

Dating from the nineteenth century, this large preserving pot is glazed with emerald green outside and pale yellow ocher inside. It has an elegant tapered base, flared top and two upright handles. It is from southwest France, likely Anduze or Tournac.

Anduze and Tournon-sur-Rhône (Tournac) in southern France have rich pottery traditions linked to their geography and local resources. Anduze, located near the Cévennes mountains in the Gard department, is famous for its decorative garden vases and utilitarian olive oil jars, inspired by Italian designs since the 17th century. Tournac, situated along the Rhône River in the Ardèche department, has been known since the 18th century for its durable stoneware olive oil jars and preserving pots, essential for local agricultural practices. Both regions' pottery reflects their agricultural heritage and culinary traditions.
