This large Savoyard ceramic pitcher dates from the early 20th century and has the slightly irregular form that gives hand-thrown regional pottery much of its character. The cylindrical body is fitted with a simple loop handle and hand-pinched spout, while the front is decorated with a freely hand-painted floral motif in cream, green and warm red. The pale decoration stands out beautifully against the deep chocolate-brown glaze, whose subtle variations in tone add further depth to the surface. Small areas of glaze loss are visible throughout, consistent with age and use. A fine hairline is visible mainly from the interior but does not appear to compromise the solidity of the piece.
Made for everyday domestic use, Savoyard pitchers like this combined sturdy, practical forms with simple painted decoration that brought color and individuality to modest household pottery. Here, the rich dark glaze, handmade irregularities and softly worn surface give the piece a particularly appealing rustic character. Because of the interior wear, it is best considered decorative today, displayed on a shelf or dresser, or used for flowers with a watertight liner inserted inside.
