This large Savoyard ceramic pitcher likely dates from the early 20th century and has the simple cylindrical form typical of traditional Savoie pitchers, with a loop handle and a deeply pinched spout. Its warm orange ground is enlivened by a freely painted floral motif in deep blue-green, green and cream, creating an appealing contrast. Areas of glaze loss and surface wear are visible throughout, adding to the rustic character of the piece and reflecting its age and use.
Savoyard pottery was made principally for everyday domestic purposes, but practical forms such as pitchers were often decorated with bold flowers and other motifs that gave them an unmistakably regional charm. Because of the wear to the glaze, this example should now be considered decorative rather than watertight.
It would work beautifully on open shelving or among a collection of country ceramics, and can still be used for fresh flowers if a watertight liner is inserted inside.
