This substantial glazed terracotta water jug, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, originates from Burgundy in eastern France The generously rounded body rests on a short foot and rises to a rolled collar fitted with an arched strap handle, complemented by a small side ear and a raised, well-defined spout at the shoulder. Warm terracotta glaze is hand-decorated with cream slip trailing in scalloped bands, dotted reserves, and zigzag motifs, all finished with a glossy clear glaze. Light wear, small edge nicks, and minor firing imperfections attest to its use while adding to its antique character.
Originally made for drawing and serving water in rural homes, the vessel reflects the rustic elegance of regional pottery, where simple utilitarian shapes were enlivened with lively, hand-drawn ornament. Today it offers decorative impact as well as authenticity, whether displayed on kitchen shelving, set on a console, or used to hold branches, its earthy tones and expressive detailing harmonizing naturally with wood, stone, and linen.
