Art Deco Turquoise-and-Gold Ceramic Cockatoo, c.1930 - 17¼"

This large Art Deco ceramic cockatoo, circa 1930, has a distinctly glamorous presence, its exotic subject and dramatic silhouette enhanced by a rich turquoise-and-gold finish. Perched upright on a stylized branch, the bird is modeled with an imposing swept crest, powerful curved beak and an almost theatrical sense of poise. The decoration has a wonderfully handcrafted quality, with brilliant turquoise enlivened by irregular mottled gilding and a fine crackled surface throughout. The crest, beak, claws and base are finished in warm gold, adding richness and emphasizing the sculptural details. The turquoise and aged gold create an opulent, jewel-like effect, while light rubbing and a few tiny losses to the gilding add a subtle sense of age.

The mark beneath, “Sèvres M.N.F. France,” refers to the Manufacture Nouvelle de Faïences, a private Sèvres workshop established by ceramic engineer Paul Sailly. The MNF mark was registered in 1929 and used until around 1936, placing this piece firmly within the Art Deco period. The workshop specialized in artistic faience and became known for decorative animal sculptures and richly textured finishes.

With its exotic subject, generous scale and gilded glamour, the cockatoo brings a playful note of Art Deco luxury to a room.
