This very large contemporary ceramic bowl is a piece of handmade studio art pottery, stamped Sanke Thurnau beneath the base and made in Thurnau, Bavaria. It has a broad, shallow profile with gently flared sides and a narrow foot, and is surprisingly lightweight for its generous size. The pale cream exterior is deliberately restrained, placing the emphasis on the richly glazed interior.
Inside, a glossy deep aubergine ground is crossed by vertical bands of turquoise, green and violet that converge around a large pale central motif, finely outlined with flowing linear decoration. Small turquoise dots are scattered across the darker glaze, while the visible throwing rings introduce a softer rhythm beneath the graphic design. The combination of saturated color, fluid line and subtle variations in the glaze gives the bowl a distinctly individual studio-pottery character.
A firing hairline is visible beneath the base, formed during production and not affecting the structure of the bowl. There are no visible chips. Its generous scale and expressive interior make it especially effective as a centerpiece on a dining table or kitchen island, whether filled with fruit or seasonal produce or left empty to let the richly glazed surface take center stage.
