Large Copper-Clad Theatrical Medieval-Style Throne Chair, 20th Century - 54¼"

A large 20th-century theatrical throne chair, constructed in light softwood and clad in sheets of copper. The high back, broad arms, block feet and strongly architectural uprights give it an imposing, almost medieval silhouette, while the copper surface is animated by irregular, fabric-like ripples that give the metal an unexpectedly soft, almost draped quality. Visible studs and rivets add to the deliberately robust character of the piece. The metal has developed a deep, irregular patina, with rubbing, oxidation and areas of wear, including small losses on the finials of the backrest, all of which give this modern chair a convincingly aged, almost antique presence. The leopard-pattern covering was recently added over the raw plywood seat panel and could easily be replaced with a custom cushion or upholstery to suit a particular interior or aesthetic.

This chair appears to have been made specifically as stage furniture for theatrical productions, where its exaggerated proportions and unmistakable throne-like form would have needed to read clearly from a distance. More prop than conventional furniture, it was conceived for visual impact rather than refined cabinetmaking; yet the hand-worked copper cladding gives the surface an unexpected degree of sophistication and texture.

It would sit naturally in a ranch setting among timber, leather and stone, or provide a strong sculptural counterpoint to whitewashed walls and restrained, organic furnishings in a minimalist Mediterranean interior. In a more layered bohemian setting, its worn copper surface and theatrical character feel equally at home. Its scale, patina and stage history give it a remarkable presence.
