Large Dutch Repoussé Copper Candle Reflector, 17th Century - 25½" x 22½"

A large Dutch repoussé copper candle reflector, dating to around 1660, with a striking octagonal form worked in concentric bands of raised bosses, elongated ovals and beaded ornament. At the center, a broad convex panel was designed to reflect and amplify candlelight, and its surface remains remarkably bright, with relatively little oxidation for its age. The detachable iron candle arm projects from the lower edge and retains its simple circular drip pan and socket. Small dents and irregularities are visible throughout, consistent with centuries of use, while the reverse shows the hand-worked construction particularly clearly. An old metal patch or plate at the back has been adapted to accommodate a modern wire for hanging.

Reflectors of this type were made to multiply the effect of candlelight, using a polished metal surface to throw light back into an interior at a time when artificial illumination was both precious and limited. The repeated geometric repoussé decoration does more than ornament the piece: its raised surfaces catch the light from different angles, creating a lively play of highlights around the central reflector. 

Rarely encountered on this generous scale, it has a refined yet highly individual presence. Hung alone against plaster or a dark painted wall, the octagonal silhouette and warm metal surface read almost as an abstract composition; incorporated into a more layered interior, its age, hand-worked texture and original function add depth and historical resonance. It could be discreetly electrified for modern convenience, although candlelight remains the most atmospheric option, allowing the repoussé surface to catch and reflect the flame as originally intended.
