Large Early 20th-Century Cast-Stone Garden Vasque - 18" x 41¼"

This substantial early to mid-20th-century garden vasque is made from cast stone, with a broad rounded rim and a deeply modeled foliate frieze encircling the body. The understated, somewhat medievalizing decoration, reminiscent of Romanesque carved stonework, gives it the appearance of a much earlier architectural fragment. Its generous proportions and low, spreading silhouette give it considerable presence, while decades outdoors have softened the surface to a warm, mottled patina of pale stone, darker weathering and traces of moss. It may originally have been raised on a pedestal and used as a basin. There are old chips and losses, particularly along the rim where the internal metal reinforcement is visible in places.
