A large early 20th-century rounded cachepot planter by Jérôme Massier (1850–1916), Vallauris, signed Vallauris beneath the base and J. Massier to the side. Generously scaled, this earthenware planter features a full, sculptural silhouette set on a warm buff ground, richly decorated in relief with garden flowers and wheat sheaves. The hand-painted palette of leafy greens, cornflower blue, soft yellow, and deep burgundy is beautifully framed by a dark chocolate-glazed rim and foot, while a teal scalloped band encircles the lip. Twin strap handles rise from the shoulders, and the interior is finished in a pale cream glaze. The piece is in good condition, showing light surface wear, small scuffs, and fine glaze crazing consistent with age.
Vallauris, in the south of France, has been an important center of ceramics since the 19th century, and the Massier family workshop, active from the mid-1800s onward, played a defining role in establishing the town’s international reputation for artistic pottery. This example follows a model created by Jérôme Massier and later produced in the Vallauris tradition, each piece individually handcrafted and hand-painted, ensuring that every example is unique.
Striking as a centerpiece, it works beautifully as a planter with a discreet glass liner, filled with branches or dried grasses, or displayed unfilled to highlight the lively relief decoration and painterly surface. Its warm, sunlit tones pair effortlessly with marble, oak, and aged metal, bringing a refined note of Vallauris craftsmanship to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
