Large French Ceramic Chinoiserie Cache-Pot - 17¾" x 11¾"

A grand ceramic cache-pot from Patricia and Walter Wells's apartment in Paris. It can be used as a large ice-bucket or a pot plant holder.

The piece is substantial: a deep, oval basin with small handles on each side, glazed in white and decorated all over in a rich, painterly green. The decoration is chinoiserie in spirit — palm trees, broad tropical leaves, birds, rocks and flowering plants rendered in a loose, confident hand across the body of the vessel, with a scrolling foliate border running along the rim.

Generous enough to take a substantial potted plant — a standard rose, a clipped bay, a mass of herbs — and handsome enough to hold its own on a stone terrace or kitchen windowsill, it would be equally at home on a dining table filled with fruit or cut branches, or displayed on a console or sideboard where its scale and decoration can be properly appreciated.
