Large French Ch. Degodet Champagne Transport Crate, Early 20th Century - 16½" x 19"

Built from substantial pine boards with a simple nailed construction, this old French champagne crate has a wonderfully robust, utilitarian appearance. The front carries the faded stencilled inscription “Champagne Ch. Degodet – Branscourt, Marne,” while numbers appear on the small sides. Vertical battens strengthen the corners, and the open front appears to result from the loss of an original panel or lid. Decades of handling have given the wood a beautifully varied patina, with warm golden tones, darker weathered surfaces, pronounced grain, old nail heads, scuffs and traces of old woodworm activity. 

The crate’s sturdy proportions and restrained industrial markings reflect its original purpose as working packaging for the Champagne trade. Its deep, open form now lends itself particularly well to storing logs, books, bottles or other household items. The combination of faded lettering, richly toned pine and substantial construction gives it a quietly rustic presence in both traditional and more contemporary interiors.
