The bold original “Champagne E. Mercier & Cie – Épernay” lettering gives this large French champagne crate its distinctive graphic character. Made from roughly sawn pine boards, nailed together with characteristic gaps between the planks, it has a rustic but sturdy construction typical of a working transport crate. Likely dating from the early to mid-20th century, it retains a warm, naturally aged patina, old nail marks and an appealing stencilled champagne bottle motif on one side. There is a small loss to one side, together with expected wear and evidence of old woodworm activity.

Originally made for storing and transporting champagne, this large crate has plenty of character, with its authentic stencilled lettering, rustic construction and warm, aged patina. Its generous size and open form also make it practical for contemporary storage, whether for logs beside a fireplace, magazines and books, blankets and cushions, or bottles in a kitchen or wine cellar.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
