A very large French copper cocotte from the main kitchen at Chanteduc, kept on the open shelf so it is always within reach. From the personal collection of Patricia Wells, it is stamped Made in France and dates to about forty years ago. Patricia still uses it regularly, noting that “it’s great for making chilli con carne and soups.” The interior is lined in stainless steel for everyday practicality and easy care.
The craftsmanship is evident in the thick copper walls with a mellow, fire-kissed patina, a well-fitted lid, and sturdy riveted side handles with a warm, bronze tone. Its generous scale suits family stews, stocks and slow braises, the kind of recipes that shape Patricia’s life between Paris and Provence. As part of the mise en place of a busy teaching kitchen, it carries the easy readiness of a trusted tool, used, respected and returned to its place.
At home, let it live on the range or an open shelf, as at Chanteduc, ready for soup nights or a convivial chilli. Bring it to the table with a simple ladle and a good crusty baguette, where its patina and provenance speak quietly of French markets, careful cooking and the thoughtful hospitality that define Patricia Wells’ world.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
