This large French porcelain serving platter, dating from around 1900, has a beautiful elongated oval shape traditionally known as a _plat torpilleur_, designed for presenting a whole fish at the table. Fittingly, its interior is hand-painted with a fish swimming among water lilies, floating leaves and slender aquatic plants. The fish is rendered with remarkable attention to detail, from its finely painted scales and pink fins to its rather amusing, slightly surprised expression. The beautiful palette of deep teal, soft turquoise, pale green and delicate pink gives the scene a lovely freshness. The gently irregular outline and softly undulating rim complement the flowing brushwork, adding to the individuality and poetic charm of the piece. A fine gilded line follows its graceful contours. Unmarked, the platter is in good overall condition, with its gilding beautifully preserved and only light traces of age.
The naturalistic painting and delicate colors reflect the artistic interest in nature around the turn of the 20th century. Both charming and sophisticated, this platter would make a beautiful centerpiece on a long dining table or kitchen island. It could also be displayed upright on a plate stand, in a kitchen hutch or on a mantel, allowing the full composition to be appreciated like a small painting.
