A large unframed oil on canvas still life, this abundant basket of vegetables is painted in earthy greens, warm ochres, and soft ivory tones against a mellow brown ground. Signed R. Coste and dated 1889, the work also bears the name Liautaud inscribed on the stretcher, likely referencing a former owner. The composition follows the market-scene tradition that celebrated the kitchen garden, depicting leeks, carrots, squash, and leafy greens with tactile brushwork and gentle, natural light. The painting shows stable, age-appropriate craquelure and a couple discreet restorations that do not detract from its strong decorative presence.
This generous canvas brings warmth and a quietly rural elegance to a dining room, kitchen, pantry, or wine room. Hang it above a sideboard with copper, stoneware, and cutting boards for layered texture, or pair it with contemporary pieces to soften a modern setting. It can be displayed unframed for a studio feel, or set in a dark wood or gilt frame for a more formal presentation, inviting a sense of gathered harvest and convivial meals.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
