Large French Napoleon III Japonisme Black-Lacquered Faux-Bamboo Mirror, c.1870 - 47¾" x 41¾"

This large and unusual French mirror dates from the Napoleon III period (1852–1870) and features an elaborate black-lacquered wood frame turned to imitate bamboo. The rectangular mirror plate is surrounded by an intricate openwork structure of intersecting faux-bamboo rails, slender uprights and turned finials, culminating in a particularly distinctive crest. Curled elements rise above the frame and support small pendant ornaments resembling bells, adding a playful note to the otherwise graphic composition. The mirror glass is heavily patinated, with extensive foxing and losses to the silvering that considerably soften the reflection and give the surface an atmospheric, almost painterly quality. The black lacquer is well preserved, with only light age-related wear.

The design reflects the growing French fascination with Japanese and East Asian decorative arts during the second half of the 19th century. As Japanese objects became increasingly available in Europe, bamboo forms and other Japanese-inspired motifs entered fashionable interiors and contributed to the development of Japonisme. French makers frequently recreated bamboo in turned wood, combining these exotic references with the decorative opulence of the Napoleon III era.

The mirror’s generous scale, intricate faux-bamboo frame, and distinctive crest give it a refined, individual character, while the deeply aged glass adds depth and atmosphere.
