Larger than usual and full of presence, this papier mâché milliner’s head is hand painted in soft ivory with inky black hair, arched brows, and coral lips, its cheeks warmed by a lovely blush. The tapered bust shows a teal bodice with a dark V neckline and a floral spray at the front, a charming touch that heightens the folk character. As is typical of such working forms, the back is left open, a practical feature that allowed the papier mâché to be released from its mold and fully dried while keeping the form lightweight for workshop use.
Dating from the late 19th century, it belongs to the tradition of head forms introduced in the second half of the 18th century to support caps and headdresses so they remained pressed and well shaped for milliners and cap pressers. The surface is in good, timeworn condition with light scuffs at the base, small paint losses, and a faint seam line at the crown consistent with age.
A sculptural accent with quiet whimsy, it sits beautifully on a console, dressing table, or bookshelf, where its soft palette of teal, cream, and rose lends gentle color and character. Style it alongside antique textiles, hat stands, and painted boxes, or let it stand alone as a conversation piece. It looks especially compelling when grouped with other vintage and antique milliner’s heads, creating a layered, collected display rich in charm and history.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
