Large French Wire Basket with Square Handle Circa 1950s

An antique French wire basket, circa 1950s, from the ensuite bath of Le Marin, one of the guestrooms at Chanteduc. From the personal collection of Patricia Wells, it is accompanied by her note of use and affection. Patricia explains, "I love wire things; this one was used for used hand towels." The basket reflects her intelligent simplicity and generous hospitality, the practical beauty that underpins life at Chanteduc. Hand formed in France, the piece is crafted from pliant wire that narrows gently at the waist and rises to an undulating rim finished with a ringed edge. A tall strap handle is steadied by graceful scroll brackets, while a circular foot with looped detailing gives lift and balance. Airy and easy to carry, modest in scale yet purposeful, it embodies the usefulness and craftsmanship Patricia values in her kitchens and gardens between Paris and Provence. Today it would be perfect beside a washstand for guest towels, set in a kitchen for linens or market produce, or in a garden room for lavender cuttings. It also stands beautifully on its own, the openwork celebrating French craftsmanship and a life lived between Paris and Provence.
