This large vintage pitcher from Poterie de Cliousclat showcases the region's rich ceramic tradition with its lustrous green glaze and embossed grapevine motifs. Bearing the inscription "Vive le Vin," it was designed for serving wine or water, with a cleverly raised interior border near the spout to catch ice and prevent it from pouring out. The contrasting pale yellow interior enhances its rustic charm, while the gracefully curved double handles provide both aesthetic appeal and functional ease.
Poterie de Cliousclat, located in the Drôme region of southeastern France, has produced pottery since at least the 10th century, benefiting from the area's abundant clay deposits. By the 19th century, the village had become a hub for utilitarian earthenware, and in 1902, Marius Anjaleras centralized production with a large wood-fired kiln. Over time, the pottery evolved beyond dairy vessels to include decorative and garden ceramics. Despite a temporary closure in 2012, the workshop reopened in 2017 as a cooperative, preserving its heritage of handcrafted craftsmanship.
This pitcher is in good condition, with some wear on the base and light surface imperfections consistent with the artisanal glazing process. It makes a striking addition to a French country or rustic kitchen, perfect for displaying fresh flowers, serving drinks, or as a standalone decorative piece on a farmhouse table.
