Large Hand-Painted Vallauris Ceramic Presentation Platter by Jérôme Massier, Early 20th Century - 14½"

This large Vallauris ceramic presentation platter, produced by Jérôme Massier in the early 20th century, beautifully captures the cheerful spirit of Provençal decorative arts. Circular in form with a gently irregular rim accented by two small opposing lug handles, it is fashioned from buff earthenware framed by a rich brown border and a turquoise inner band. The central decoration was first incised into the clay, then hand-painted beneath the glaze with scarlet poppies, white and yellow daisies, blue cornflowers, green foliage, and golden wheat ears, creating a lively composition enriched by subtle texture and crisp definition. The composition is signed J. Massier, while the reverse bears the impressed factory mark Jérôme Massier Vallauris (A.M.). The platter remains in very good antique condition, with a few tiny chips and light surface wear consistent with age.

Jérôme Massier belonged to the celebrated Massier family of Vallauris, whose workshops helped establish the town as one of France's foremost ceramic centers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While the family became renowned for its technical innovations and artistic glazes, it also produced finely hand-painted earthenware inspired by the flora, colors, and light of Provence.
