This large French four-panel folding screen, dating from the late 18th century, features a series of painted canvas scenes depicting rural life in Provence, linked by the theme of water. Each tall panel presents a different landscape, with fountains, waterways, small stone buildings and figures going about their daily activities. The soft blues of the skies, greens of the trees and warm earth tones are framed by faded terracotta-pink borders. Below, smaller panels feature bouquets of flowers and rustic motifs, including agricultural tools and vessels tied with decorative ribbons. The canvases are mounted on wooden frames, with painted paper covering the surrounding sections. The reverse is more simply decorated with sepia-toned motifs on a cream ground. Fine craquelure is visible throughout the painted surfaces, along with rubbing and age-related wear. The lower sections show more pronounced damage and losses, which could be discreetly restored or covered, although they can also be left as they are for their aged character. Despite these signs of age, the painted scenes retain their beautiful colors and details, and finding a screen of this age and scale with its painted scenes so well preserved is increasingly uncommon.
With its generous proportions, delicate painted landscapes and faded colors, this screen has the unmistakable character of an old French country château. The four individual scenes invite a closer look, while the repeated borders and decorative lower panels give the whole piece a pleasing rhythm. It would work beautifully as a room divider in a large sitting room or standing against a wall as a decorative backdrop. The water-themed scenes could also be particularly charming in a bathroom, provided the space remains dry and well ventilated, as humidity and splashes could damage the delicate painted surfaces.
