A striking late 19th-century terracotta storage jar from Spain or Portugal, distinguished by its generous proportions, warm earthy tones, and beautifully weathered surface. Originally used for storing olive oil or wine, the vessel has developed a rich natural patina, with mineral deposits and age-darkened markings that speak to decades of practical use. A small opening near the lower body, where an antique tap or cork would once have been fitted, allowed the contents to be poured with ease. Around the shoulders, a subtle band of stamped decoration encircles the vessel like a necklace,  adding a discreet ornamental touch to its otherwise simple, utilitarian form.

The elegant rounded body tapers to a narrow base, a traditional form designed to be partially buried in the ground for stability and to help keep its contents cool. To allow the jar to be displayed and enjoyed in a contemporary interior, it has since been fitted with a custom-made iron tripod stand, which is a later addition.

Its sculptural silhouette and wonderfully textured surface make it a striking decorative piece, whether placed indoors or in a sheltered outdoor setting. Beautiful displayed on its own or filled with tall branches or dried botanicals, it brings an authentic Mediterranean character to any space.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
