This large Italian demijohn dates from the late nineteenth century and is crafted in hand blown glass of a rare and elegant plum tone. Its generous rounded body tapers to a narrow neck that has been cut by hand with a knife, a traditional finishing method that leaves an irregular rim and confirms its age. The surface shows light scratches and signs of use consistent with age and use, adding to its authenticity and character. Once used for the storage and transport of wine or spirits, such vessels were essential in rural Italy, valued for their durability and capacity. The deep, glossy color is both uncommon and refined, giving the piece a strong visual presence while reflecting the craftsmanship of historic glassmaking traditions.
Today, this demijohn makes a striking decorative statement. Placed on the floor, beside a console, or near a hearth, it brings depth and warmth to an interior, with light filtering through the plum glass and creating subtle variations in tone throughout the day. It can be left empty as a sculptural object or styled with tall branches, where its scale and rich color anchor the space. The glass adds a sense of quiet luxury and timeless character, blending effortlessly into both classic and contemporary settings.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
