Large Louis XVI Style Trumeau Mirror w/ Sage-Gray Painted Finish - 75½" x 44"

A grand French painted trumeau mantel mirror in the Louis XVI style, dating from around 1900. Intended to hang above a fireplace, its characteristic design places the mirror in the lower section, where it would have reflected at eye level above the mantel, while the upper panel serves as an elegant decorative feature. The tall rectangular frame is embellished with elegant floral and foliate relief decoration beneath a later soft sage-grey painted finish that has acquired a pleasingly timeworn patina.

The upper panel is centred by a striking mythological trophy of arms featuring the shield of Perseus displaying the head of Medusa, enclosed within a beaded border and flanked by floral rosettes and scrolling foliage. Below, the original rectangular mirror plate is framed by delicate bead moulding and surmounted by a carved ribbon bow. Presented in good antique condition, with scattered desilvering to the mirror, light wear to the painted finish, and minor losses consistent with age. 

Its large scale and balanced composition make it a natural focal point above a mantel, console, or sideboard. The softly weathered sage-grey finish lends a quiet elegance, while the gently foxed mirror reflects light with warmth and character, allowing the piece to complement both French country and Gustavian interiors as well as more contemporary spaces.
