This generous Provençal tian features a vivid, glossy green interior glaze set against a natural buff clay body, its wide conical profile finished with a subtle pouring lip. Handcrafted in the traditional manner and likely dating to the mid-20th century, it displays characteristic throwing rings and light glaze drips at the rim that speak to the potter’s hand. Small nicks to the rim, minor glaze skips, and gentle wear to the exterior are consistent with age and use and contribute to its honest utilitarian charm.
Historically, such versatile basins were indispensable in rural kitchens across the south of France, used for washing garden produce, mixing doughs, or rinsing dishes, with the notched lip designed for easy pouring. In a contemporary home, its generous scale makes an engaging centerpiece on a kitchen island filled with citrus, or left empty to showcase the luminous glaze. It also works beautifully as a salad bowl for summer tables.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
