A large Napoleon III tray crafted from lacquered and gilded boiled cardboard, dating to the mid-19th century. The tray features a softly scalloped outline with a raised rim, its surface finished in deep black lacquer and bordered by delicate gilt decoration. The fine golden frieze runs along the edge in a restrained ornamental pattern, framing the broad central field. Over time, the lacquered ground has developed subtle variations in tone, with areas gently lightened by exposure to sunlight, creating a softly mottled patina that adds depth and character to the surface.
During the Napoleon III period, trays such as this were often made from boiled cardboard, a lightweight yet durable material that allowed artisans to create elegant domestic objects with graceful curves and lacquer finishes. The technique was widely used for serving trays and decorative pieces, offering the visual richness of lacquer while remaining practical for everyday use.
Generous in scale, the tray works beautifully on a coffee table, console, or ottoman, where it can gather books, candles, or glassware. Its softly worn lacquer, delicate gilding, and fluid outline bring a touch of historic elegance while the mellow variations in the surface lend the piece a quietly atmospheric presence.
