A large olive-wood salad bowl from the kitchen at Chanteduc, Patricia Wells’s home in Provence. Beautifully turned from a single piece, it reveals ripples of honey, caramel and cocoa grain with a soft, hand-rubbed sheen. Olive wood is naturally dense, durable and rich in oils, so it resists stains and ages gracefully. The broad rounded rim and deep well show the maker’s sure hand, while a gentle patina reflects regular, careful use in the Wells kitchen.
Generously scaled, it welcomes market greens, sun-warmed tomatoes and garden herbs, the convivial salads Patricia serves to students and friends at long tables between Paris and Provence. Patricia explains, “It’s fabulous,” and notes it came from the Vaison-la-Romaine market, “great for a big, big party!” Place it at the center of a farmhouse table with citrus and bay leaves, or carry it to the terrace brimming with lettuce leaves.
