A large Provençal tian bowl dating from the early to mid 20th century, hand-thrown in earthenware and notable for its generous scale and beautifully tapered conical form. The broad basin is finished with a wide banded rim and a subtle pouring lip, while the interior is coated in a luminous butter-yellow glaze flecked with fine speckling. The glaze spills naturally over the rim, contrasting with the unglazed exterior, whose soft sandy tones and accumulated patina speak to decades of use. An incised "O" mark beneath the pouring lip adds a distinctive handmade detail. Good antique condition, with scattered glaze losses, rim fritting, and surface marks to the unglazed exterior, reflecting years of use and enhancing its authentic utilitarian character.
For generations, tians were indispensable in the kitchens of southern France, where they served for washing vegetables, mixing ingredients, preparing preserves, and countless other household tasks. Their wide, open form and gently sloping sides made them especially practical, while the glazed interior provided a durable, easy-to-clean surface. Today, this substantial example retains all the quiet charm of its working life. Filled with seasonal fruit or a generous arrangement of flowers, it makes a striking centerpiece on a farmhouse table, kitchen island, or console. Its warm palette and sculptural silhouette bring an immediate sense of Provençal warmth and authenticity to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
